Ford Bronco New Energy: A Chinese Market SUV with Global Potential

Ford has introduced the Bronco New Energy, a plug-in SUV specifically designed for the Chinese market. This mid-sized vehicle is manufactured by Ford's Chinese partner, Jiangling Motors Corporation (JMC), and is available in both extended-range EV (EREV) and full EV configurations. While styled to evoke the rugged image of the U.S. Bronco, the Bronco New Energy features a unibody design, distinct from the body-on-frame construction of its American counterparts like the full-fat Bronco and the Bronco Sport crossover. It utilizes a JMC platform and engine, with no shared parts with the U.S. models.

Powertrain and Range Options

The Bronco New Energy offers two distinct powertrain choices. The EREV variant incorporates a 1.5-liter turbocharged engine that serves solely to charge the 43.7 kWh battery. This configuration provides an electric-only range of 137 miles, which can be extended to a total of 748 miles when the generator is engaged. The full EV model foregoes the gasoline engine, instead equipped with a larger 105 kWh battery. This version boasts a CLTC average range of 404 miles. The full EV model delivers 445 horsepower, while the EREV variant produces 415 horsepower.

Design and Interior

The exterior design of the Bronco New Energy has been noted for its appealing and futuristic aesthetic, while still retaining the characteristic Bronco spirit. The interior is described as high-tech and well-thought-out, with plastics that feel robust and capable of withstanding wear. The responsive touchscreen further contributes to the modern feel of the cabin.

Market Context and Future Prospects

Ford's sales in China have seen a significant decline, dropping from 1.2 million cars in 2016 to under 300,000 by 2025. The introduction of electrified models like the Bronco New Energy is seen as a strategic move to address the growing demand for New Energy vehicles in China, where plug-in models now constitute over half of all new car sales. Despite its potential appeal, the Bronco New Energy is produced for the Chinese market and is not expected to be released in America. The vehicle's pricing in China starts around $33,000.

Comparison to Competitors

The Bronco New Energy's unibody design places it in a similar category to vehicles like the Kia EV9 and Chevrolet Blazer EV. This approach differs from traditional body-on-frame SUVs. While some Chinese manufacturers have explored unique designs, the Bronco New Energy aims for a balance of rugged appeal and modern functionality.
