Mitsubishi Montero Set for U.S. Return by 2030, Dealers Confirm

Mitsubishi Montero Poised for U.S. Comeback
Mitsubishi dealers are optimistic about the return of the Montero to the American market, with expectations pointing towards an arrival by 2030. This potential revival follows Mitsubishi's announcement to reintroduce the Pajero nameplate this fall with a new SUV. The upcoming vehicle is slated to be a body-on-frame SUV, closely related to the Triton pickup truck, and is anticipated to compete with models like the Toyota Land Cruiser.
Dealer Meeting Reveals Future Product Plans
Details about the Montero's potential U.S. return emerged following a dealer meeting held on June 5 in Chicago. Approximately 180 retailers from the United States and Canada were in attendance, where they were given a preview of Mitsubishi's future product lineup. The highlight of the presentation was the new ladder-frame SUV, which sources indicate will be significantly larger than the current Outlander.
Design and Features of the New Montero
Attendees described the forthcoming SUV with boxy styling, featuring vertical headlights and a wide light bar. The rear design is characterized by T-shaped taillights. A notable departure from previous generations, the new Montero is expected to adopt a conventional tailgate, moving away from the side-hinged rear door and externally mounted spare wheel that were hallmarks of earlier models. Inside, the cabin is reported to be premium and modern, offering a more upscale experience than the Triton's interior. The SUV will provide three-row seating, with ample space for passengers in the rearmost seats. The new Montero is also expected to offer around 12 inches (nearly 305 millimeters) of ground clearance, positioning it as a capable off-roader, comparable to vehicles like the Ford Bronco and Bronco Raptor which offer 11.5 inches (292 millimeters) and 13.1 inches (332 millimeters) of ground clearance, respectively.
Broader Product Strategy for North America
Beyond the Montero, Mitsubishi's plans for the North American market include other significant updates. The Outlander Sport is slated for a next-generation redesign in the second half of 2028. The larger Outlander is also expected around the same timeframe, transitioning to an all-Mitsubishi architecture, moving away from its current Renault ties. Furthermore, by 2029, a new midsize truck is planned for U.S. dealerships. This truck will be based on the body-on-frame platform that underpins the next-generation Nissan Frontier and will draw inspiration from Mitsubishi's Triton pickup.
