Rivian R2 Performance Matches Tesla Model Y Efficiency

Rivian R2 Performance Achieves Identical Efficiency to Tesla Model Y Performance
Official EPA ratings indicate that the Rivian R2 Performance crossover offers the same energy efficiency as the Tesla Model Y Performance. This is a notable achievement for Rivian, considering the R2 Performance is heavier, taller, and wider than its Tesla counterpart, and is also designed with greater off-road capability.
Efficiency and Range Comparison
According to EPA figures, the 2027 Rivian R2 Performance equipped with 21-inch wheels can travel up to 330 miles on a full charge. Its average energy consumption is rated at 32 kilowatt-hours per 100 miles, equating to 3.12 miles per kilowatt-hour. In comparison, the 2026 Tesla Model Y Performance, also featuring 21-inch wheels as standard, is rated for up to 306 miles of range with an identical energy consumption of 32 kWh/100 miles.
Battery Size and Weight Differences
The Rivian R2 Performance utilizes an 87.9 kWh high-voltage pack, which is larger than the 81 kWh battery found in the Tesla Model Y Performance, as reported by Car and Driver. This larger battery contributes to the R2's extended range. Weight-wise, the R2 Performance tips the scales at approximately 5,000 pounds, while the Model Y Performance is about 500 pounds lighter.
Performance and Capability
While both are dual-motor, all-wheel drive crossovers, the R2 offers a higher ride height. The R2 boasts a 9.6-inch ground clearance, compared to the Model Y's six inches, enhancing its off-road potential. In terms of power, the Model Y Performance's dual-motor setup delivers around 510 horsepower, enabling a zero-to-60 miles per hour sprint in 3.3 seconds. The R2 Performance, however, produces a more potent 656 hp, achieving 60 mph from a standstill in 3.6 seconds.
Alternative Configurations and Future Models
The FuelEconomy.org website also lists ratings for the R2 with 20-inch all-terrain wheels. This configuration is rated for 307 miles of range and an energy consumption of 34 kWh/100 miles (2.94 miles per kilowatt-hour). Rivian plans to introduce a more affordable, rear-wheel drive version of the R2 starting in late 2027. The base R2 RWD is projected to offer over 275 miles of range, with a long-range variant expected to exceed 345 miles on a full charge.
