Land Rover to Manufacture Defender in the United States with Stellantis Partnership

Land Rover is poised to make history by commencing vehicle production in the United States, marking the first time the British automaker will build vehicles on American soil. This significant move is facilitated by a partnership with Stellantis, a global leader in the automotive industry. The collaboration is expected to bolster Land Rover's presence in North America, a market identified as its largest.

Strategic Expansion in North America

JLR CEO PB Balaji articulated a clear ambition for the brand's future in the US. "Our aspiration, in the coming years, is to grow our US business to the size of the entire JLR business as it exists today," Balaji stated. This ambitious goal underscores the importance of the North American market, which currently accounts for 30 percent of Jaguar Land Rover's global sales. To achieve this growth, a substantial increase in US operations is anticipated.

Balaji further emphasized the strategic focus: "To truly manifest the power of our brands, we will increase our focus on North America, our biggest market." He highlighted the growing demand for luxury products and a strong preference for Land Rover's brands as indicators of significant growth potential. The company is also exploring new segments for its Defender brand, aiming to offer more tailored luxury products and experiences to US clients.

The Stellantis Collaboration

The partnership with Stellantis addresses a key logistical challenge for JLR: the absence of a manufacturing facility in North America. A non-binding Memorandum of Understanding has been announced between Land Rover and Stellantis, paving the way for this collaboration. The initial product to emerge from this partnership will be a Defender model built in the US.

Currently, Land Rover manufactures the Defender in Nitra, Slovakia. The move to produce in the US is also anticipated to help Land Rover circumvent tariffs on vehicles imported from Slovakia. For Stellantis, the deal offers the advantage of gaining a stronger foothold in North America through a US production partner.

Future Product Strategy and Electrification

Looking ahead, new Defender models are slated to be launched on the Electrified Modular Architecture (EMA) platform, offering both hybrid and all-electric powertrain options. JLR's first EV based on the EMA platform is scheduled for reveal later this year. Concurrently, new Range Rover and Range Rover Sport models will continue to utilize the modular longitudinal architecture (MLA) platform, incorporating various hybrid and electric versions.

Beyond the Defender, Land Rover plans to evolve its Discovery SUV while ensuring it remains true to its heritage. In a broader shift, Jaguar is set to transition into a fully electric brand. The Type 01 is also expected to launch later this year as a four-door GT.

Market Context and Tariffs

The decision to produce the Defender in the US could provide a significant advantage by helping Land Rover avoid the current 15.0% tariff imposed on vehicles imported from Slovakia, a rate that has increased from 2.5%. This strategic production shift is a key component of JLR's broader plan to expand its footprint and sales in the crucial North American market.
