Maserati Nettuno V6 Engine Set for Hybrid Future

Maserati Confirms Hybrid Future for Acclaimed Nettuno V6 Engine
Maserati has revealed significant plans for its Nettuno V6 engine, confirming that hybrid versions are in development. Introduced in 2020 with the MC20 sports car, the Nettuno V6 marked Maserati's first in-house engine in over 20 years and has since been integrated into models such as the Grecale SUV and GranTurismo. The company has stated that the Nettuno V6 will continue to play a crucial role in its lineup for the coming years.
Hybridization Strategy Detailed
Maserati's Chief Marketing Officer, Cristiano Fiorio, expressed enthusiasm for the engine's evolution, stating, "We do see a hybrid future for the Nettuno, because it's another type of performance that we can get. It also gives additional value to the customer in the future." COO Santo Ficili added his personal affection for the engine, remarking, "I am personally in love with this engine."
The brand's electrification strategy for the Nettuno V6 will encompass two main approaches: mild-hybridization, utilizing a 48-volt system, and high-voltage hybridization. Importantly, Maserati has confirmed that it will not be pursuing plug-in hybrid solutions for these models. "We have both low-hybridization—meaning 48-volt—and, eventually, high-voltage hybridization in our product portfolio. We are not pursuing a solution with the plug-in hybrid… So, mild hybridization, high-voltage hybridization, not plug-in hybridization," explained Fiorio.
Model Integration and Future Outlook
While it remains unclear which specific Maserati models will be the first to receive the hybridized Nettuno V6, industry expectations point towards the Grecale SUV. This is particularly relevant given that the hybrid four-cylinder option has been removed from the Grecale's lineup, creating a need for alternative electrification. The Nettuno V6 is expected to feature in future iterations of the Grecale, followed by other models in the Maserati range.
Maserati's commitment to the Nettuno V6 underscores its importance to the brand's performance identity. The engine's adaptability to hybridization suggests a long-term strategy to balance power with evolving efficiency demands, ensuring its relevance in the automotive landscape through to at least 2027.
