Volkswagen Unveils Ambitious EV Expansion with ID. Polo and ID. Cross

Volkswagen Expands EV Portfolio with ID. Polo and ID. Cross
Volkswagen is gearing up for a significant expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) offerings, with plans to introduce over 10 new models by 2026. This strategic push includes the launch of the new entry-level electric model, the ID. Polo, and the subcompact electric crossover, the ID. Cross. The company has also updated its ID.3 model, now known as the ID.3 Neo.

Introducing the Volkswagen ID. Polo
The ID. Polo represents Volkswagen's new entry-level electric offering, built upon the ID.2all concept. This model features a new front-wheel-drive platform and a refined, cleaner design. Notably, the interior incorporates physical buttons, addressing previous criticisms regarding the over-reliance on touchscreen controls. The electric Polo starts at €24,995 in Germany.
Under the hood, all ID. Polo variants are equipped with a front-mounted electric motor, available in three power configurations: 114 hp, 133 hp, or 208 hp. The performance-oriented ID. Polo GTI boosts power to 223 hp and has a starting price just under €39,000.
Customers can choose between two battery options for the ID. Polo. The 37.0-kilowatt-hour LFP (lithium-iron phosphate) battery offers a range of 204 miles (329 kilometers), while the larger 52.0-kilowatt-hour NMC (nickel-manganese-cobalt) battery provides an extended range of 283 miles (465 kilometers). The ID. Polo GTI exclusively features the larger battery, with an estimated range of 263 miles (424 kilometers) on a single charge.
The regular ID. Polo is currently available to order in Europe, with the GTI version scheduled to follow in mid-October.
Volkswagen ID. Cross: The Electric Crossover
Expanding the EV lineup further, Volkswagen will introduce the ID. Cross, a subcompact electric crossover set to debut later this year. This model shares its technical underpinnings with the ID. Polo but is housed in a larger SUV body, similar to the T-Cross.
The ID. Cross will offer the same 37.0-kWh and 52.0-kWh battery options as the ID. Polo, delivering an estimated range of up to 261 miles (420 kilometers). This range is slightly reduced compared to the hatchback due to the increased weight. The ID. Cross is expected to be priced around €28,000 in Germany, approximately €3,000 more than the ID. Polo. It is slated for a European market launch sometime this fall.
Volkswagen ID.3 Neo: Refreshed Hatchback
The ID.3 has undergone a mid-cycle facelift and is now designated as the ID.3 Neo. This updated model addresses feedback by reintroducing physical buttons and a dedicated volume knob, enhancing user interaction. The discontinuation of the aging Touran minivan after 11 years on the market also marks a shift in Volkswagen's product strategy.
Volkswagen's commitment to expanding its EV presence is evident with these upcoming models, aiming to strengthen its position in the competitive European market.
